When eleven-year-old Sophia and her beloved chocolate Labrador, Jake, are nearly hit by a car, a mysterious Door appears in midair—and they tumble through it into the Kingdom of Nym, a fractured world unraveling after a War of Words. Here, words are powerfully literal and increasingly dangerous: the wrong one can be weaponized, or worse, disappear forever.
Joined by a fastidious Secretary and a tiny winged herald named Harry, Sophia and Jake set off in search of the Knobbler—the only one who can craft a knob to open the door and return home. Along the way, they traverse perilous landscapes – places where they must speak in numbers or rhymes and avoid monsters like the Hippocratimus and the Near Misses who misuse language to waste time, and the parasitic Little Uns and the terrible Dys, who turn everything positive into a negative).
With the help of her friends Sophia restores freedom of speech throughout the land. But even as the way home opens, Sophia learns that Jake belongs to Abra and if she chooses to return to the world she knows it can only be without him. Can she find the right words to say goodbye? Can anyone?
The Jake of Everything is a story about friendship and love, and how they go on, even after death. It is a story about the language of loss and the landscape of grief, as highly individual as they are indisputably universal.
