Out for a walk one day, an accident thrusts Sophia and her Labrador Jake through the Door to Abra, the ancestral home of all Labradors. Joined by a Secretary, a herald, and with help from others they meet along the way, Sophia and Jake seek the Knobbler in far away Sympatheia to craft a knob to return home. On the way, they travel through the Kingdom of Nym where a War of Words has led to the banishment of so many words, it is difficult to say anything at all. During the course of their journey they release all the banished words so there is free speech in the kingdom once more – but even with all the words in the world at her disposal when the time comes, Sophia is not prepared to say goodby to Jake. Will she follow him to Abra, or return home, and face the sadness that no one talks about waiting for her there?

The Jake of Everything is a book about the journey to find the right words at the right time to say goodbye. During the journey 11 year old Sophia learns many new words, and many new ways to say familiar words, but in the end it is not the words that matter, but simply getting them said, in a heartfelt way. It is a story about prevailing over the monstrous difficulties of communicating. It is a story about friendship and love, and how they go on, even after death. It is a story about the language of loss and the landscape of grief, things that are highly individual even as they are indisputably universal.
